Radon
The basement waterproofing industry is continuing to recognize that poor indoor air quality is a problem that can be remedied by our industry. Considering that indoor moisture and water buildup leads to added problems within the home, basement waterproofing contractors should implement practices that will better serve their clients.
Indoor air quality control is becoming more crucial as people become aware of the health risks caused by poor indoor air quality. Over 50 percent of the air circulating through the living space comes from either the basement and/or crawl space. Continued exposure to poor indoor air as a result of toxic mold spores, radon gas infiltration, moisture and other soil gases has the potential to affect the health of those occupying the home, particularly by triggering allergies and asthma.
Improve Indoor Air Quality Control with Pene-Seal-Crete
Fortunately, controlling indoor air quality is within the contractor’s reach with the use Pene-Seal-Crete, by Emecole. Pene-Seal-Crete is a deep-penetrating sodium silicate concrete sealer that retards humidity and radon gas from passing through porous concrete.
Pene-Seal-Crete can be applied on either poured foundations or concrete block. Upon application, Pene-Seal-Crete reacts with the concrete’s free lime by forming an expanded crystalline structure beneath the surface. This process fills up pores, voids or cracks within the concrete - that may or may not be visible to the human eye – eliminating capillary action to prevent the penetration of moisture and radon gas infiltration. In addition, Pene-Seal-Crete can be used to permanently densify, strengthen, dustproof and waterproof new and existing concrete.
Application of Pene-Seal-Crete
Available in quantities from one gallon jugs to 55 gallon drums, Pene-Seal-Crete should be diluted in a 1:3 ratio with warm water and applied immediately – the product should not be thinned with solvents. Prior to use, all surfaces should be cleaned to ensure that all dirt, dust, grease, oil or other foreign particles are removed. Pene-Seal-Crete should be applied on a pre-dampened surface, in moderate weather conditions, with a temperature of at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, while avoiding direct sunlight, heavy winds or rain. To maximize its use, Emecole recommends two applications of Pene-Seal-Crete.
The use of Pene-Seal-Crete is a necessary application towards the improved control of indoor air quality. As the basement waterproofing industry continues to adapt, contractors can easily stay ahead by offering indoor air quality services to their existing basement waterproofing business.
